Land clearing

Land clearing that makes overgrown ground usable again.

Overgrown Mowing provides professional land clearing services across Auckland, Northland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Whether it’s an overgrown section, a paddock that’s gone to scrub or a rural block needing attention, our commercial 4×4 flail mowers tackle dense vegetation and leave the cut material on the ground as mulch. No spraying, no burn piles and no cartage required.

Land clearing: an overgrown hillside block before and after

What we clear

Scrub clearing for sections, paddocks and rural blocks.

Land and section clearing covers a lot of ground, literally. It’s the vacant residential section that’s gone to seed since settlement, the paddock a drystock or lifestyle block owner has lost to scrub, or the rural block where fence lines and farm tracks have disappeared under growth. Different starting points, same result: overgrown land cleared, mulched and ready to use.

Our commercial 4×4 flail mowers are built to tackle mixed, overgrown vegetation, including long grass, kikuyu, scrub, gorse, blackberry, woolly nightshade, privet and young saplings. Their rotating flails cut and shred vegetation where it stands, leaving the material on the ground as mulch rather than requiring spraying or removal. We assess each property to ensure the vegetation and terrain are suitable for our equipment.

Vacant sections

Overgrown residential or development sections, left tidy ahead of building or subdivision work. See section clearing.

Paddocks & blocks

Paddock clearing that reclaims pasture and rural blocks from scrub, long grass and encroaching regrowth, with ongoing lifestyle block maintenance if you need it.

Fence lines & tracks

Fence line clearing and farm tracks opened back up where growth has swallowed the access.

How we clear it

Land clearing in three steps.

01

Walk the block

We check what’s growing, how steep or wet the ground is, what hazards may be hidden underneath and how our machinery can access the work area. If part of the property isn’t suitable for safe machine operation, we’ll explain the limitations before starting.

02

Mulch it flat

Long grass, scrub, young saplings and mixed overgrowth are cut and mulched where they stand. Depending on the vegetation density and conditions, some areas may require additional passes.

03

Leave it ready

Mulched material stays down as ground cover, so the section or paddock is left usable and easier to keep on top of with ongoing vegetation management.

Ready to reclaim your overgrown property?

Tell us where your property is, roughly how much land needs clearing and what type of vegetation you’re dealing with. We’ll help you determine the next step.

Why mulch it

Land clearing without burn piles or cartage.

Traditional land clearing usually means a digger pushing everything into heaps, then either waiting to burn them or paying for truckloads of green waste to go to the tip. Burning off also depends on the fire season and often needs a permit, so check what applies in your area before you plan on it. Land mulching with a flail mulcher skips all of that. Growth is cut and shredded where it stands, and the mulch stays on the ground as cover while it breaks down.

For section clearing ahead of a build, that means a tidy, walkable site your surveyor and builder can actually get around. Our guide to clearing a section before building covers the timing. For paddocks and lifestyle blocks, it means pasture back in use without spraying. If you’d rather avoid herbicides near stock, waterways or gardens, our guide to getting rid of gorse without spraying explains how mulching and follow-up mowing fit together. If the block is thick with gorse or blackberry, see gorse and blackberry clearing, and for banks too steep for a tractor, slope mowing. Rough or hard-to-reach ground is covered on our flail mowing and land mulching page.

“Amazing work from the team clearing 2 acres of thick kikuyu and blackberry from my land. They were great operators and were able to keep all my native trees while nailing the invasive stuff. Communication was good and the quote was very fair. Would recommend Overgrown Mowing to anyone with land!”

Where we work

Land clearing across Auckland, Northland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty

As a land clearing contractor, we take on jobs across four regions: steep rural and coastal blocks in Northland, lifestyle blocks, overgrown paddocks and section clearing around Auckland, paddock margins and hill country in the Waikato, and orchard margins and fast-growing scrub in the Bay of Plenty. Every job is quoted on its own, and here is what affects the price.

Common questions

Land & section clearing, answered.

What does land clearing with a flail mower involve?

Our commercial 4×4 flail mowers cut and shred overgrown vegetation where it stands, leaving the material on the ground as mulch. This avoids the need for burning or carting away cut vegetation. The suitability of this method depends on the vegetation, terrain and access conditions. Our flail mower vs slasher guide explains how it differs from a standard slasher.

Can you clear a section before we start building?

Yes. For residential and vacant sections, see our dedicated section clearing service and our guide to clearing a section before building. Our Land Clearing service is primarily focused on larger rural properties, paddocks and overgrown land.

Do you take the cleared vegetation away?

No, everything is mulched and left on-site as ground cover rather than carted off.

Can you reclaim a paddock that’s gone to scrub?

Yes. Paddocks that have been left too long often end up with a mix of long grass, scrub and woody regrowth. Our commercial 4×4 flail mowers cut and mulch mixed overgrowth where it stands. Depending on the vegetation density and site conditions, some areas may require additional passes.

Can you clear fence lines and farm tracks specifically?

Yes, boundary lines and access tracks that have disappeared under growth are a common request, often alongside a wider paddock or block clearing job.

How much does land clearing cost?

It depends on the size of the area, how dense the vegetation is, how much woody growth there is, how steep or wet the ground is and how easily our machinery can access the work area, so we quote per job rather than off a flat rate. See what affects the price. Send us a few photos and roughly how big the area is, and we’ll give you a straight answer.

How should I prepare my property before you arrive?

Please identify any hidden hazards, including fencing wire, waratahs, irrigation lines, septic systems, rocks or holes. Mark any trees or plantings you want retained, move livestock away from the work area and ensure access gates are clear. Let us know about any particularly wet or boggy ground.

Can you work around trees or plantings I want to keep?

Yes. We can selectively clear vegetation around trees and plantings where there’s sufficient room for our machinery to operate safely. Please identify anything you want retained before work begins. The distance we can work from trees, fences and other obstacles depends on the equipment and site conditions.

Is there anything you can’t clear?

Our equipment is designed for overgrown grass, weeds, scrub and suitable young woody growth. We don’t undertake tree felling, stump grinding or excavation. Some areas may also be unsuitable because of excessive slope, wet ground, restricted access or hidden obstacles. We’ll assess the property and advise what’s practical and safe.
