Start with the problem in front of you.

How to get rid of gorse without spraying

Flail mower vs slasher

How the two compare for paddock topping, long grass mowing and tough growth, and when each one is the right tool. It includes a side-by-side table and what changes on steep ground.

When to clear blackberry in NZ

How blackberry spreads, the best time of year to clear it, and the blackberry control that helps manage regrowth. It includes where blackberry takes hold first and a simple 4-step timeline.

Clearing a section before building

Where section clearing fits in the build, what mulching does and doesn’t do, and what to sort out first. It includes a pre-arrival checklist, consents to check and how long clearing takes.

How much does land clearing cost?

What drives the price of land clearing, from vegetation and slope to access and hidden hazards, and how quoting works. It includes simple ways to keep your land clearing cost down.

Which guide do I need?

If the problem is a plant, start with the gorse or blackberry guide: they cover why it spreads, when to act and how to manage regrowth. If you’re weighing up how to tackle it, the flail mower vs slasher guide explains which machine suits which ground. And if you’ve bought a section that’s gone to scrub, the section guide walks through where clearing fits in the build and what to sort out first. And if you’re budgeting, the cost guide explains what drives the price. Every one of our land clearing guides ends with common questions, and if yours isn’t there, send us a photo and ask.

Quick answers

Land clearing guides: quick answers

The questions we hear most often, answered briefly, with links to the full land clearing guides.

Can you get rid of gorse without spraying?

Yes. Mechanical mulching clears established gorse, and follow-up mowing on the regrowth, plus getting pasture or planting established, helps control future regrowth. Read the gorse guide.

Is a flail mower better than a slasher?

For dense, woody or steep ground, yes. A slasher is fine for regular topping of open, flat paddocks. Compare them side by side.

When is the best time to clear blackberry?

Late spring to early summer, before the berries ripen, stops that season’s seed spreading. Clearing later still works if the ground is firm. See the blackberry timeline.

Should I clear my section before the surveyor visits?

Usually, yes. Surveyors, engineers and designers need to see and walk the ground, and an overgrown section hides contours, pegs and hazards. Read the section guide.

How do I work out which weed I’ve got?

Weedbusters’ weed list has photos and profiles of New Zealand’s common pest plants. You can also send us a photo when you ask for a quote.

Does this advice apply outside your four regions?

The advice applies anywhere in New Zealand, but pest plant rules vary, so check your own regional council’s pest management plan. Our clearing service covers Northland, Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty.

Got overgrown land? Send us a few photos.

Wherever the property is across Northland, Auckland, Waikato or the Bay of Plenty, send us the location plus photos of the vegetation, terrain and access. If our land clearing guides haven’t answered your question, we’re happy to talk it through.
